About Melanie & Her Teaching Philosophy

I have always enjoyed music as a young child and when I was 7, my parents gave me the
opportunity to learn the piano and the electronic organ. I love children and am very
passionate about helping them discover the joy of music so that they will be able to
express themselves through piano playing.

Every child is unique and does not have the same approach to learning. Therefore, I am
flexible in my teaching approaches. I am firm but kind, patient and loving. I believe that
technique is important but it is not the be-all-end-all of piano playing.

For the younger learners, lessons are conducted in a fun way, with singing, music and
movement and percussion playing to build interest alongside keyboard skills. For those
who are exam-focused, I work with them to achieve good technique for holistic
performances in their exams. For students who are not keen on classical piano, I offer
them the Trinity Electronic Keyboard (digital piano) syllabus. I also have students who want
to play the latest pop songs they love and some who write songs and orchestral works.
Whatever their motivation for learning piano/music, I do my utmost best to help my
students grow their interests.

I genuinely enjoy teaching students of all ages regardless of where they are at or their
motivations for piano playing. Many parents are grateful for my patience with their children
and how I am able to help them achieve their best potential.
